So…I was watching again Shingeki no Kyojin (with my brother) and I realised that Levi appears in the first episode. I must watch now every episode to see what I’ve missed…
When it’s really true that this is Levi in the very first episode of the series then it tells us a lot about his personality.
We’ve started to get to known him as ‘humanity’s strongest soldier’ – unapproachable and rather cold; hiding behind the mask of a soldier. Just like Erwin who cares for everyone within the Scouting Legion he simply has decided to close up his heart in order to be the superior they needed. He has to carry the expectations of mankind on his shoulders and is also respected that much among the scouts that he simply can’t show any weaknesses. That’s how we know him. He would do everything for his duty as soldier – and he would also do everything in his might to comfort those who need it. In short he got highly misunderstood by the most people in the beginning since they weren’t able to see his caring side since he’s mostly trying to hide it behind his façade. As captain it is his responsibility to keep up the morale; to take care of everyone – thus he isn’t allowed to break down like everyone else.
We’ve seen several times in the manga/anime how people mentally fall apart due the loss of their loved ones; friends and families. In the first episode we’ve seen the Scouting Legion returning with heavy losses – just like in episode 22. As a human with emotions and feelings it’s really hard to move on with your life without going insane. Think about all the losses of strong, brave humans within the Scouting Legion over the past five years – and even more the years before. We don’t know when Levi had joined the military – but we can safely assume that he’s longer in it than just simply five years. After all he’s canon-wise around thirty years old - and no matter how strong he is; you won’t reach the rank of ‘captain’ that easily.
What I’m trying to say is that Levi’s personality has changed over the years – actually just like commander Erwin’s. If we compare their expressions in the first episode and the one of episode 22 we can see a drastic change. Both of them are keeping up their mask, trying to be strong – while in the beginning they were just as depressed as anyone else. Which means that at some point they had decided to lock away their hearts and emotions. It’s obvious that Levi cared for his squad and their deaths meant a huge loss of friendship for him – however, he didn’t complain about it or got hysterical like everyone else. This is a sign that he his truly restraining his emotions which makes him almost inhuman. But this doesn’t mean he isn’t feeling the pain inside his chest – it’s just that he’s pretending not to feel anything. Because he HAS to be like that in order to give mankind the hope they truly need.
So, if this person is really him than we can safely assume that his personality canon-wise was different when he joined the Scouting Legion. Remember these things which Petra had said – in the beginning he was rather blunt and aggressive; even disobeyed orders. But even she said that he HAS changed over time. And I think this change happened in the time of five years. I assume it was when their commander had his mental breakdown and Erwin started to be the commander; I also assume that this was the time when Levi got promoted to captain. Maybe they both decided it would be for the best to be only ‘soldiers’ in the future – without feelings and emotions.
Because mankind needs strong soldiers; need humans who can lead them through their despair. In the end means this that Levi has sacrificed his own life, his own humanity for the sake of others. Just like the commander. They are silently enduring all the pain alone, knowing that it is for the best.
We know that Levi joined the Scouting Legion due Erwin - and probably Levi has thought that he would be able to save anyone with his strength. He was becoming stronger to protect everyone. However, he noticed that he isn’t able to save anyone - that people who he loved as friends still fall during battle; that the fields behind their backs got soaked in blood. His strength didn’t change a thing. He was too weak to protect anyone; not this kind of hero mankind needed. This might be the reason why he’s so annoyed about the public’s opinion about him since he feels pain - knowing that this isn’t the truth. He’s not invincible, just a soul bounded to an human shell. He has his limits - limits he can’t admit in public to not cause any panic. So trying to become inhuman in order to be strong enough to survive this insanity is probably the best solution.
If you knew that people are relying that much on you what would you do? Are you ready to sacrifice your own emotions for the sake of other people? Are you ready to throw away your own life when you can save someone else? This is the definition of his whole personality. He’s selfless – doesn’t care about himself and more about others since this is the path he has chosen.
